Wayne Carey: Former AFL star spruiks lifestyle off-the-grid property that’s ideal for doomsdayers

Football legend Wayne Carey is once again dipping his toe into real estate to spruik a Kilmore East property that’s ideal for an off-the-grid family lifestyle – or even doomsdayers.

The ex-North Melbourne dual Premiership captain stars in a listing video for the 19.02ha acreage at 510 O’gradys Rd that’s for sale with a $2.3m-$2.5m price guide.

In the clip, Carey talks about the sprawling site’s amazing views, floodlit tennis court and salt mineral pool equipped with a water slide and spa.

The AFL Hall of Famer also comments that the home is equipped with solar panels, an electricity generator in case of a power outage and “yabbies galore” in its dams – meaning whoever lives there could be self-sufficient.

“For all those doomsdayers out there, people that think the world might end soon, guess what?” Carey says in the video.

“You can live up here for months.”

In 2024, Carey appeared in a clip to for a Heathcote Junction house, featuring its own private pub, that’s on the market with a $1.9m price tag.

The previous year, he popped up in a video as part of North Melbourne apartment’s sales campaign.

Carey has been in the videos at the behest of former Richmond player turned O’Brien Real Estate property consultant and auctioneer, John Rombotis.

The four-bedroom home sits on 19.02ha of land in Kilmore East.

The Kilmore East home’s owner, Mark Hay, has lived there for about four years with wife Ashton and their three children.

Mr Hay said that coming from Melbourne, he had never previously considered living in the country.

But when their family was checking out a school in the area for one of their daughters, they impulsively decided to inspect the four-bedroom house.

“As soon as we saw the property, we fell in love with it,” Mr Hay said.

The amount of space, privacy and quiet won them over, along with the views.

The pool has its very own water slide.

The house has two bathrooms including an ensuite.

The family enjoy spending summer afternoons around the pool and cooking on the outdoor area’s built-in barbecue.

They raise sheep and chickens, and also have two horses and two pet alpacas named Ernie and Bernie.

“We love Kilmore and the country,” Mr Hay said.

“It’s like the lifestyle you never knew you needed.”

Mr Hay said the 11 or so sheep, the older horses who don’t get ridden and Ernie and Bernie would be included in the property’s sale.

The acreage’s infrastructure includes three stables with holding yards, a dog run, chicken coop and a loading ramp and cattle holding yard.

There’s also a car and equipment wash bay and a 18sq m x 12sq m workshop fitted with high-clearance sliding doors, two offices, its own driveway, and a turnaround space.

Mr Hay said since moving in, new paddock electric fencing had been installed and the water and bore pumps upgraded.

The acreage’s new owners will inherit pet alpacas Bernie and Ernie, plus some sheep and horses.

Inside the timber-fitted house, there’s new kitchen appliances; including two Bosh Pyrolytic ovens, a Bosh induction cooktop and an ASKO dishwasher.

The casual living and meals space features a wood heater and split-system unit, while a formal lounge and dining area is warmed by an open fire.

“From the big floor-to-ceiling windows, you can see all the countryside and the rolling hills, it’s the same in the kitchen and other dining area,” Mr Hay said.

The main bedroom suite includes an ensuite with double basins and a dressing room.

And the house has recently been repainted and had new carpets installed.

Kilmore East is about 78km from Melbourne’s CBD.

Mr Hay said that his favourite memories of the home included an annual AFL Grand Final weekend celebration with extended family members, who bring their caravans and park on the property.

The adults compete in a friendly tennis tournament while children go yabbying and ride motorbikes in the paddocks.

Along with the solar panels and electricity generator, the residence’s tank water system and fruit orchard have impressed guests.

“All my friends say, ‘If the world ends, we’re coming to your place’,” Mr Hay joked.

The views are second to none.

He said that he and his family were planning to move to another house nearby, that would have more room for their teenagers.

Mr Rombotis said the property was a 10-minute drive to Assumption College in Kilmore and was also close to Kilmore East and Wandong train stations and the Hume Freeway.

“The house is as solid as they come and it’s on a concrete slab, it’s got everything you need,” Mr Rombotis said.
